The Second Annual Grown-Up Science Fair (GUSF) went off without a hitch this year on May 9th at The Rivoli, thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone involved. Even before the doors officially opened at 8pm curious people were popping in to see what our contribution to the Toronto Scientific Community’s giant open house party, Science Rendezvous, was all about.
With generous contributions from innovative law firm Gilbert’s LLP, we were able to expand on last year’s offerings in our quest to explore science in decidedly non-traditional ways. Visitors were greeted outside by Steve Mann and his hydraulophone, while inside they played Periodic Table Twister, created works of art using parts from a local electronics surplus store, tested their knowledge against an 8th grade science test, and created amazing-looking creatures using Spore. Upstairs University of Toronto Professor Stephen Morris explored the physics of pool, while the The Rivoli’s resident expert Cape Breton Red was on-hand to show people how pool should be played.
All that, and there was Flubber, an excellent end-of-the-night dance party very ably deejayed by Dale Duncan, Stephanie Forder, and DJ Jackrabbit, and a take-home gift of saplings kindly donated by Gilbert’s LLP. We can hardly wait to see what happens next year.
Many thanks must be extended to our sponsor, Gilbert’s LLP, and to NOW Magazine, Science Rendezvous, and The Rivoli.
